Stringing and Oozing: Causes and Fixes

Updated 2026-09-29 · TerraEco Store

What you're seeing

Thin hairs stretched between separate parts of a print means plastic oozed from the nozzle while traveling. Small blobs at seam points mean pressure wasn't relieved before the move. Both have the same short list of causes — work it in order.

Fix in this order

  • Dry the filament first — moisture is the top cause, especially with PETG and TPU (drying guide)
  • Drop the nozzle 5–10°C from your current setting
  • Tune retraction: 4–6mm at 40 mm/s (Bowden) or 0.5–2mm (direct drive)
  • Raise travel speed to 150–200 mm/s and enable wipe or coasting
  • Check for a partial clog or a worn nozzle flattening the tip

Material notes

PETG strings more than anything common — treat every PETG stringing case as wet-until-proven-dry. PLA rarely strings once temperatures are sane. TPU is the odd one: too much retraction causes stringing in TPU, so cut retraction instead of adding it.

When it's the model

Tiny scattered islands will string no matter the settings — orient the model to minimize travel moves, or accept a quick cleanup pass with a heat gun.
